Sober Fun

Sober fun is one of the most important tools in recovery because let’s face it… how boring would life be without fun? At Milestones we incorporate as much sober fun into the day as possible, a long with two specific evenings dedicated to fun off campus.

Many have never experienced pool parties, bowling, dancing, and concerts without the use of drugs and alcohol, so doing these can be a triggering experience- at first! For example, after a little practice we have had patients begin to plan sober pool parties themselves inviting sober friends and other sober livings in the area. This is a skill that can be taken home after treatment and sober living as well!

At Milestones we have numerous large sober fun events. These events have included parties- with cotton candy, dunk tanks, live bands, caricature artists, and dancing. We only hope to do more of this in the future! With the help from our alumni in the area, more events will be possible. With our amazing 120 acre ranch including lakes, cafes, and pools throughout the property the possibilities are endless as to how much sober fun can really be had!

In addition to all our parties, there is even more to be mentioned! We have a pet cow on the ranch named “Moo 2”. She is almost one year old and thought she was a human, so we got found her some sober goat friends. Now Moo 2, Stevie Nicks, and Stealy Dan are the best of friends and companions to all the patients at Milestones.

The amount of fun that can be had is limitless. If you like to sing and dance, we have a vocal coach, dance instructors, music therapy… and if we don’t have it… we will get it if it adds to your ability to stay sober and have fun in life!

Another amazing quality is that at Milestones, all therapists are encouraged to think outside of the box and get out of the office. You may find many of the individual sessions taking place on the lake on one of our paddle boats, our huckleberry fin raft, or perhaps on the island. Sometimes we may even do a nature walk on the beach… anything to make the day a little more special and of course… fun! Group therapy may begin with a walk to the lake and feeding the ducks. We have also been known to take the group (yoga, meditation, relapse prevention, art therapy, etc.) down to the beach when it’s a beautiful day!

At Milestones we believe that a huge part of recovery (in addition to fun) is finding purpose and meaning and that a part of this journey and realization comes from having some sober fun. Through all of these different experiences presented while at treatment we hope our patients can realize that being sober does not have to mean being bored. We hope they will learn to incorporate these experiences into their routine once they leave treatment and through all that is presented be able to take some new hobbies home with them as well!
