Opiate Addiction Treatment
Opiates, narcotics derived from the opium plant which include morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl, are among the most abused drugs in the world. Traditionally prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain, many users become addicted to the effects produced by the opiates, such as euphoria, “nodding” (an alternatively drowsy and alert state of consciousness), and an apathetic attitude towards troubling or upsetting events. Over time, users find that they need increased amounts of the drugs to produce the same effects and avoid withdrawals. Withdrawals from prescription opiates mirror that of heroin, with users suffering from an array of symptoms, including increased anxiety and agitation, intense muscle pain, insomnia, nausea and vomiting. Users abusing prescription opiates can be particularly hard to treat due to their belief that since the drugs they are using are legal, they do not have an addiction.
