Benzodiazepines, or “benzos”, are tranquilizers often prescribed to treat panic and anxiety disorder, insomnia, alcohol withdrawal and seizures. There are currently 15 benzodiazepines approved by the FDA, with 4 (Xanax, Valium, Ativan and Klonipin) being among the top 100 medications prescribed in the United States. Benzos carry a high potential for abuse and have catastrophic effects if stopped suddenly without medical supervision (including delusions, seizures, suicidal ideations and death). Benzodiazepines are also extremely dangerous when mixed with other drugs, particularly alcohol and opiates, greatly increasing the risk for overdose.
